Te Kaakano Community Garden and Nursery

An environment for life transformation, positive living and healthy communities.

Our Vision

"Lives transformed through caring for each other, caring for the land and sharing what we have"

Our Mission
"A place for local whanau/families to grow food and work together as a community while increasing awareness of environmental needs and issues."

Hutia te rito o te harakeke kei whea te koomako e koo?
Ki mai ki ahau, he aha te mea nui i te ao?
Maaku e kii atu, he tangata, he tangata, he tangata.

Tear out the centre of the flax, where will the bell bird call?
I ask, what is the most important thing in the world?
My answer, the people, the people, the people.

What we do:

Community Garden

The community garden was established over 10 years ago and Desert Spring has been facilitating the running of the garden since 2007 in response to requests from local whanau who wanted to learn to grow their own vegetables and re-connect with the land.

Working Bees

Mornings at the gardens are fantastic! – Usually a small group gets stuck in doing basic tasks such as planting and weeding and we always enjoy a great morning tea together. In season - this includes fruit grown on our very own fruit trees. This is an ideal time to bring children or come along for some time out for you.

Growing native plants

A huge potting shed and sheltered shade area with watering system has allowed us to establish a small native tree nursery. We are starting by collecting eco-sourced seeds as well as growing plants from cuttings and seedlings to establish our range.

Education

We want to see people actively involved in our community – and believe the Te Kaakano Community gardens provide an opportunity to inspire people to grow their own food. In doing this we also become more aware of environmental issues – and the needs in our surrounding community related to these.
